Sandy Skoglund

Sandy was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on September 11, 1946. She study art history ande studio art at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts graduating in 1968. In 1967 she studied art history at Sorbonne and Ecole Du Louvre in Paris, France. She then went to the University of Iowa in 1969 where she studied filmaking, miltimedia art and printmaking. In 1971 she earned a Masters of Arts and in 1972 Master of Fine Art in painting. After this is when she began her interest in photography, she began teaching herself photography to show her artistic endeavors, she had experimented with themes of repetition. In 1978 she had produced a series of repetitious food item still life. One of her most famous photographs is entitled Radioative Cats fetures green-painted clay cats running amok in a gray kitchen. It takes her months to set up a set and then she photographes them. She is currently a proffesor at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She teaches photography, art installation/meltimedia.

I think her images are very odd. I personaly don’t like images that are over the top altered in photoshop, but her images are really net when you think about the fact the she built her sets her self (sometimes out of clay). I think she is very talented in both areas art and photography.

John Pfahl was born in New York on February 17, 1939. He was born in New York, New York but raised in New Jersey. He went to Syracuse University and got his under grad. in the School of Art, and his Masters in Commuications from the same University. He has had his work in several exhibitions. His waork can be found in several museums of art. One of his first major series was Altered Landscapes (1974-1978). Another body of work is the Power Places (1981-1984) he recieved some attention from envoironmentalists the said that their “view these photographs as chilling vivions because they portray the true damage being done”. Another series is Smoke (1988-1989) this series is the smoke from power plants. That is about all I have found on him.

I really like his smoke series. I love the look and feel of these photos. I do not believe that these photos were digitaly altered. The color in the smoke is amazing. I have an Aunt that lives in L.A. and her neighbor was a power plant I can remember being a child and seeing all the smoke it looks just like this. I really enjoyed his work.

Joel was born in New York in 1938. He started photography in 1962. He is well known as a street photographer. His work looks very editorial which I like. In his early years he was an advocate of color photography. Joel has acomplished many things from publishing books to lots of shows. One of his first books was Cape Light which is considered a classicwork of color photography and has sold more than 100,000 copies during its 25-year life he has published many other books. He as had alot of work appeared in over 350 exhibtions in museumsand galleries around the world. Joel has alos produced some documetries. One of them was a trip that he and his son had taken. That is a little history on Joel.

I really like his work. He has that street style which I love. The way he captures it is like you were there seeing your self. I had never heard of him before and really enjoyed looking at his work.
